Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 2 cups self-rising flour Can substitute with a mixture of all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • 1 stick frozen butter 1/2 cup; salted or unsalted both work.
  • 1 cup cold buttermilk Can substitute with milk + lemon juice or vinegar.
  • 1/2 cup melted butter For brushing.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C).
  2. Pour 2 cups of self-rising flour into a large bowl.
  3. Grate the frozen butter directly into the flour.
  4. Cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Pour in the cold buttermilk and stir with a rubber spatula until a shaggy dough forms.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead a few times until it holds together.
  7. Fold the dough over several times to create layers, then pat to a 1-inch-thick rectangle.
  8. Use a 3-inch biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits and place them on a baking sheet so they're touching.
Baking
  1. Bake for 12–14 minutes until golden.
  2. Brush the tops with melted butter in the last 1–2 minutes of baking if desired.
  3. Remove from the oven and immediately brush with melted butter again for a glossy finish.

Notes

Store cooled biscuits in an airtight container. For a variation, try adding cheese, herbs, or spices.
